What is Graston?
Graston is a form of manual therapy known as IASTM or Instrument -assisted soft tissue mobilization. It is a therapy that uses instruments with a specialized form to massage and gently scrape the skin. The general goals of Graston therapy are to increase function and range of motion in the soft tissue (muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments). This is accomplished by breaking down the scar tissue and fascial restrictions that are usually associated with some form of trauma to the soft tissue. This can be due to chronic stress, a pulled muscle, a sprained ligament, and so on. Graston therapy will help to reduce these restrictions by stretching connective tissue in an attempt to rearrange the structure of the soft tissue being treated (e.g., realign muscle fibers, tendon fibers, ligament fibers). The treatment may be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments such as a chiropractic adjustment. |
Benefits of Graston
Your body is comprised of muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Injuries to these soft tissues plays a significant role in dysfunction within the body. While it may not sound like a serious injury, a simple back muscle strain or a sprained ankle, for example, can cause excruciating pain and difficulty with movement. The Graston Technique offers several potential advantages to the patient with such injuries, these include:
